He was the oldest of the seven children of Matthew Flinders Senior, a surgeon, and his wife Susannah, née Ward. He got a good education as it was thought that he would later be a surgeon, like his father and grandfather. WebCaptain Matthew Flinders RN (1774-1814) circumnavigated Australia for the first time, mapping it in 1803. It is on the Swanston St side of St Paul's Anglican cathedral. It is a fine statue, showing Flinders looking ahead. I was erected by public subscription in 1925.
